Building automation: domotics for commercial and industrial buildings
Home automation or domotics are automation technologies applied also to buildings. Building automation is the automatic centralized control of a building’s heating, air conditioning, lighting or security system; it can integrate devices, put them into communication and use them at the best, combining them in a very effective way.
How it works
A sophisticated domotic system allows controlling lights, audio-video systems, openings, etc. through pre-set controls. The objectives of building automation are improved occupant comfort, efficient operation of building systems and reduction in energy consumption and operating costs.
Technology
Automation technologies as domotics are based on BUS, an electric/electronic system able to manage both basic and complex functions. The BUS requires a twisted-pair cable to provide power to connect devices. The home automation BUS manages and controls the domotic system by checking all devices connected: the bus receives information by the control device and operates to supervise the system.
The communication support
The communication support is the way through which devices exchange information. As mentioned, it consists of a twisted-pair cable, a coaxial or optical fiber cable and also radio frequency and infrared technologies for power supply network.
Data transmission and control panel
Data is carried on bus cable and transmitted in digital format: data are encoded as a sequence of bit in a specific communication protocol. The control panel works for sending actuations to the devices that have actuator components registered. When the actuator receives the message, it will provide a feedback that marks the signal as been properly received.
Data traffic management
Data transmission is adjusted to avoid losses of information and commands that are sent simultaneously to the BUS. For this reason, the BUS allows only one device to transmit data. A second device activated at the same time of another, will remain in standby mode until the BUS has received the first message. The standby mode only takes a fraction of a second, but it is fundamental in order to manage data traffic without any loss of information.
The differences between a BUS system and a traditional system are philosophy and results: in a traditional system, every component (lights, air conditioning, antitheft alarm…) does not need another component to function, while in a BUS system all different components are integrated and connected with each other in an interconnected system.
